Gorta, Swatragh’s Famine Story

Marcon were appointed as Principal Contractor to deliver the specialist fit out of the new Visitor Centre – Gorta Swatragh’s Famine Story.

The new exhibition will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the 1840’s rural life, they will discover how, when, and why the blight hit Ireland and particular Swatragh and the devastating effects it caused.

Set in the one-time residence of the village’s dispensary Dr Mooney, it is based around the authentic Famine soup pot that was used by the doctor to dispense soup to local residents during the Great Irish Famine.

The interpretive vision of the exhibition emphasizes the authentic stories of Swatragh before, during, and after the Great Irish Famine. Using integrated interpretation panels, illustrations, set works, audio, and interactive opportunities, the guided tour provides a nuanced view of this historical period.
